Getting Around Paris

As one of the most commonly visited cities in the world, Paris has maintained easy access for travellers over the years.  With the metro, public bus system, bike-sharing system and large pedestrian sidewalks, Paris is one of the most easily navigated cities in the world. Getting intot he city of Paris itself is just as simple. There are three airports, and six train stations all servicing the Paris area.

Paris Bus System

Whether you are arriving in Paris by plane or by train, a Paris bus is not far away. The Paris bus system is extensive. Buses run frequently, as often as every five minutes. There are over 200 bus routes throughout Paris and the suburbs. Many tourists overlook buses opting instead for the Metro, but the bus really allows you to get to know the city, as well as its people. Bus tickets are the same as Metro tickets. You can buy a ticket from the driver if you have not already purchased a ticket or a Visite Paris Pass ahead of time. If you are arriving by plane you will need to take the bus 350 or 351 from Charles de Gaulle Airport. The buses stop running at night, but then a specialized system of night buses takes over so it is unlikely you will ever be completely without a bus option.

Paris Taxis

Paris Taxis are not hard to come by. There are tens of thousands of Taxis on the streets of Paris every day. To get a taxi you can wait in line at a taxi stand, you can call for one on the phone, or you can be brave and hail one on the street. Taxi's can be expensive so it is important that you know what to expect. There is an automatic fee that the drivers charge when they pick you up. There is also a minimum charge for all rides. If you take a taxi late at night or early in the morning be prepared for more expensive rates. That being said, taxis in Paris are very convenient and popular. So popular in fact, that they can be hard to get on a rainy day. If you are coming from Charles de Gaulle or Orly airports you will be able to locate a taxi stand and get a ride into the city. It's also easy to find a taxi stand near any of the six major Paris train stations.

Paris Metro

The Paris Metro may be the most well known way to get around Paris. This iconic underground subway system is a bustling network of train lines. You can transfer from a train onto a Metro line and get into the city center that way if you are arriving in France by train. It's important to note that the Metro does stop running in the middle of the night. Therefore if you are taking a night train you may want to look into your options before you leave. If you are flying to Paris you will not be able to take the Metro until you are in the city as it does not go to the airports.

RER

The way to get into the city center from Charles de Gaulle and Orly airports is by taking the commuter train system known as the RER. Charles de Gaulle has two RER stations and Orly has one. These trains will get you into the center of Paris in 30 minutes or less. They are quick and affordable.

Walking and Biking in Paris

While it's unlikely that walking and biking in Paris will help you get to the city, unless you are a serious cyclist, they are great options once you arrive in the city. Paris is a small city. If you have your walking shoes on you can see most of Paris's arrondissements in one day. Although you will most likely want to walk more slowly and really absorb what Paris has to offer. Take a scenic stroll along the Seine, or take an active bike tour through the city's parks. Take advantage of Paris's small size and see it all.
