Paris Parks

What is there to know about Paris? Its history and culture vibrate through the city like an ever-echoing guitar riff. The city is full of famous landmarks, like the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral, and Seine River. The arts in Paris can be found in the museums and the theatre. Sports and nightlife in Paris don’t fail to please, either. And when you just need to relax and take a breather in a calm setting, Paris parks are right there, waiting for you.

Jardin des Tulieries

This beautiful garden park is situated right in central Paris, near the Louvre Museum and Champs-Elysees. While today it stands as one of the more well-known tourist sites in Paris, the palace and surrounding gardens were originally built for royalty. Catherine de’ Medici was who it was originally constructed and designed for in the 1560’s. It did not become open to regular people until the 1660’s. Even still, it is the oldest public park in Paris.

While the palace was destroyed during Napoleon the Third’s Reign, the gardens still remain as one of the more popular parks in Paris. The palace was renovated in the first decade of the 21st century.

Perhaps the most notable things to do at Jardin des Tulieries include viewing the countless number of mythological statues, walking on the Solferino Bridge which goes across the Seine River, strolling along the calm stone pathways, and sitting by the tranquil lake.

Buttes-Chaumont

This park is eerie cool. Check out the statue of Marat and the cave-like grotto for verification. Buttes-Chaumont began in 1864 during the reign of the third Napoleon and is seen as having a mixture of British and classical Chinese garden architecture influence. And one thing you will notice as soon as you walk into the park is the wide variety of birds there. Bring some bread if you want.

Easily accessible from all areas of Paris, the park Buttes-Chaumont is not in line with other French gardens. There is a waterfall that is 32 meters in height, a five acre lake, and the perched Temple of Sybille. This temple sits on an island and has to be reached via an old, shaky bridge.

Parc Montsouris

Located on the left side of the Seine River, this park is roughly 37 acres. Like many other parks in Paris, it is full of sculptures. The park was finished in the 19th century and remains one of the biggest and most popular in Paris.

The best thing about the place is without a doubt the open space here. If you want to enjoy recreational sports in Paris, this is the place to fly kites, throw Frisbee, toss baseball, and kick a soccer ball around. Running around the lake is another option as well. Parc Montsouris offers space away from the hustle and bustle of Paris.

If you are visiting Paris with a family, this is also a good place to go to. The park has pony rides and puppet shows. And the snack stands hit the spot. How can you beat that?

Bois de Vincennes

Bois de Vincennes has prepared itself to entertain. Cool things to do abound at this park. Boat rides, playgrounds, a zoo, paths for jogging, paths for skating, and a racecourse are all here. There is also a Buddhist Temple and a bird park.

The park took its design from English style and sits gracefully within the large city of Paris. If you are looking to relax, read a book, write, meditate, or zone-out at the soothing Daumesnil Lake.

Other Parks

Two other notable parks are Promenade Plantee and Bouis de Boulogne. Promenade Plantee sports a wide range of plants and pretty flowing streams, and hence is a great place to absorb fresh air. Bouis de Boulogne sits in west Paris, and is a wilderness. You can run, bike, eat, drink tea, or do whatever your heart so desires here.
