Paris Saint-Germain FC

Since the 1970s Paris Saint-Germain Football Club, or Paris SG, has been the premier football club in the city of Paris. Fans of the team can be seen all around Paris wearing red and blue in honor of the team. With a stadium located inside the city limits, Paris SG is a truly Parisian football club.

History

Until the 1970s Paris lacked an elite football club. The year 1970 marked the beginning of the Paris SG football club, who would eventually rise to high levels of competition in French football. Paris SG was created by combining two existing teams, and important investors, in order to fill in the gap that was missing in Paris football. Within four years, Paris SG was playing at the highest professional level in France. While Paris SG became known as a good football club, it was not until 1986 that they won the Coupe de France, or French Cup. This success in France meant that Paris SG was going to play on a larger European scene. The club would go on to win eight Coupe de France as of 2011 as well as various European tournaments.

Stadium

The home stadium of Paris SG since 1974 has been Le Parc De Princes. This stadium is located in the 16th arrondissement of Paris making it easy accessible by public transportation. This modern architectural structure, designed by French architect, Roger Taillibert, comfortably seats over 40,000 fans at each match. The stadium became known world wide when it hosted some of the 1998 World Cup matches. Le Parc De Princes is also home to some of Stade Francias's rugby matches, as well as musical concerts. If you find yourself in Paris and Paris SG is not playing, you can still enjoy the stadium. Tours of Le Parc De Princes are given every Wednesday. You can also check out Restaurant Le 70, the stadium's resident fancy restaurant. It is loaded with good food and good sports.

Uniforms

The colors red and blue are synonymous with Paris SG. They are also the colors of Paris itself. Throughout the history of Paris SG there have been three major companies involved in the making of the the Paris SG uniforms. Le Coq Sportif was the first manufacturer of Paris SG uniforms. They still supply the club with equipment today. Daniel Hechter designed a shirt that resembled the French flag, making it a popular choice. Adidas, one of the most famous soccer companies in the world, took over as manufacturer once in the 1970s and again in the 1980s. In 1989 Nike became the company of Paris SG which was an unusual choice at the time. They have remained the team's uniform company ever since. While companies, sponsors, and designs have changed over the years, red and blue still remain the symbols of Paris SG.

Coaches and Players

Paris SG is the home team of some of France's most famous players and coaches. Not all of the famous players are French, but they still bring Paris great pride. Mamadou Sakho, the youngest player to ever become the captain of such an elite team, is one new comer to the scene. George Weah has played for many teams all over Europe. He played with Paris SG for three years.  Luis Fernández managed Paris SG for two different stints, one in the 1990s and one in the early 2000s. He has lead the team to many championships. Paris SG’s current manager Antoine Kombouaré is also a former player. He has been managing the team since 2009.
